There are several daily feeding shows, for the time please ask at the till station. Ki-ds will love the petting zoo.

 

Chronic:
 

  • 22. Mai 1938: Mayor Dr. Alois Heuyng opens the " Krefeld zoo " as a teaching facility for the youth on the grounds of Grotenburg park. The zoo covers about half of the 9 -hectare park . 100 mostly native species of animals are shown in 40 exhibits. The entrance fee is 10 Pfennig for children, for adults 20 Pfennig. Heinrich Janssen, Director of Education and Director of the former Natural History, becoms the first Director of the zoo
  • 1939-1945: In the second World War some bombs and shells  hit. Although only two badgers and a doe dies, but many enclosures and fences are destroyed, so that most animals can escape. Therefor the he wolves must be killed.
  • 1951: Dr. Günter Voss is appointedas new director and expands the zoo on the entire 9 ha. Focus is on the domestic and European wildlife.
  • 1959: Dr. Walter Encke took over the management of the zoo . His concern is particularly suitable to care for those animals that are endangered and of which science know little how to bred  and on this way prevent the extinction of the a species. Especially species from South America are shown.
  • 1960: The first cheetahs in Europe are bred
  • 1962: The snow leopard Nuschka is acquired and forms the basis for today successful breeding of these animals.
  • 1961-1964: The outdoor enclosure for baboons , penguins and seals are built as well as the lion house.
  • 1969: Coinciding with the Frankfurt Zoo succeed the first breeding of maned wolves.
  • 1971: The " Animal Park is renamed" Zoo "because he is now also elephants, rhinos and orangutans. 300,000 visitors are coming for the first time.
  • 1974: Probably for the second time ever in a zoo a Jaguarundis is born. The breeding is long continued successfully as the only one in Germany . There is a new cheetah enclosure next to the new for lynx, so is a little South American house is opened.
  • 1.7.1975: The groundbreaking Tropical House for apes opens
  • 1983: For the first time in Europe two aardwolf pups are reared from theire mother at a zoo
  • 1986: First offspring of Nine-banded armadillos
  • 1989: The among others with the funds from the Gehlen Foundation built bird tropical hall opens and leads to great breeding success with bee-eaters and Egyptian plovers.
  • 1996/1997: Dr. Vogt is the new director. The in Europe unique breeding success with Goodfellow tree kangaroos beginns with Summer and Bud from San Diego. The studbook is led from 2003 by Dr. Dressen
  • 1998: Opening of the rainforest house
  • 2003: Dr. Wolfgang Dressen takes over the management of the zoo
  • 2004: The new Jaguar outdoor enclosure is inaugurated by by the male Jackson is jumping against the glass wall.
  • 2005: On the new outdoor facility for the Tigers, Sutera and Beludru with their offspring Ratu Raja feel very well . As of July, the zoo is its own gGmbH with the participation of the zoo friends of Krefeld. Managing Director is Dr. Wolfgang Dressen. The smooth-fronted caiman breed for the first time.
  • 2006: Davu is the in the NRW first born black rhino
  • 2008: The second is Thabo
  • 2010: Opening of the butterfly jungle and its front building. A redesign of the entrance area with the Zooshop opens
  • 2011: Construction of the Snowy Owl aviary.
  • 2012:  Opening of the Gorilla garden.
  • 2013: Construction of the Penguin enclosure

After paying the entrance fee we first se the South American Pampas with South American tapirs, guanacos and capybaras. Across we find the Bactrian camel and behind them donkeys and Shetland ponies. Then we meet alpacas, goats, Hamadryas baboons, porcupines and Humboldt's penguins as well as Californian sea lions. To the right we then have the rainforrest house home to sloths, tamanduas and saki's. In front is a butterfly house. Passing the sea lions once more and turning right at the Hyacinth macaws we se see the pachyderm house, home for black rhinos, pygmy hippos and Asian elephants. Then it's time to see the blue duiker. Behind them we find the African savannah with ostriches and different antelopes. Now turning right  we have an enclosure for giant tortoise and pelicans followed by an enclosure for gorillas. Now entering the Ape house we meet the western lowland gorilla, chimpanzees and orangutans. Out side again its time to look at kangaroos, mountain anoas and red river hog. Turning right we now enter the bird house with different species of bee eaters and tropical doves among others. Out side again we have the chital on the left and musk ox as well as Dall sheep. On the right we then have Damara's zebra and to the right goodfellow tree kangaroos, cheetahs and across the greater kudu. Then we look at the jaguar and the Sumatran tiger. A bit later we then find the flamingo lagoon. At the snow leopards we turn right, to see an aviary for waders as well as the lesser panda. Turning right once more we see the siamang and the bat-eared fox. At the jaguarundi and guereza we once more turn right to see the otter and the serval. Befor heading to the exit we meet the giant ant eater.


DE: Dieser kleine Zoo ist bekannt für seine Menschenaffenhaltung und selten gezeigten Tieren wie das Goodfellow Baumkänguruh, Löffelhunden und Dallschafen. Es begerbergt ein interessantes Regenwaldhaus und ein Tropenvogelhaus
